Windows Server 2008 Troubleshooting:

Problem: Unable to turn on the Network Discovery. You try to turn on the Network Discovery , but it goes back to off state.

Possible Solutions:

1. Check the network connections and see that the computer is connected.
2. Configure the Firewall exceptions to allow this type of network acess. Click the Windows Firewall link in the Network and Sharing Center, click Change settings, click the Exceptions tab, and check exceptions such as Network Discovery and Netlogon Services.
3. The Windows Firewall also needs to be configured to enable incoming and outgoing access. To do this go to Start-> Administrave tools-> Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. Check the Inbound Rules , Outbound Rules to make sure that the Network Discovery service is allowed.
4. If any of the above solutions does not work, turn the Windows Firewall off and then try to turn on the Network Discovery.

Here is a simple Windows Server 2008 problem and its solution

Problem: Unable to connect to the network/ Unable to ping local systems.
Solution: Make sure the Netlogon service is started. If the service does not start, Make sure its dependencies DCOM Server Process Launcher and Remote Procedure Call are started.

A little intro on Windows services:

Services: Services are applications that run in the system background. Some of these services need to be started in order to complete the activities. For Services go to Start->All Programs->Administrative tools->Services. To start a service, double click the service that you wish to start, and in the Properties window make sure the Startup type is Automatic and then click on Start. Then click OK.

Some services have Dependencies that need to be started before starting the service. To view a service’s Dependencies double click the service to open the Properties window, and click on the Dependencies tab.  Expand all of the dependencies. This window shows the services that this service is dependent on. If you are unable to start a particular service, make sure all of its dependencies are started and then retry.

Here is my experience installing Chrome OS and few pitfalls I faced in that process. First I headed to gdgt.com ( you need to register on their site) and downloaded the VMWare version of chrome OS.

Then I configured my Virtual Box to use Chrome OS. Here’s how you do it! http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/19/guide-install-google-chrome-os/ At when I tried to boot, It did not work well for me as it gave me the error Failed to start virtual machine , Failed to open release log with a VERR_SHARING_VIOLATION?

According to the VirtualBox forums the error is caused when the VirtualBox does not have clean access to the file. Some program might still be accessing or holding it for Read/Write operation. I closed all the open programs also rebooted the host system just to make sure that no program is accessing it.

When I rebooted the system again the OS booted up, but when I tried to login with my gmail ID there was this new error waiting for me Network not connected and offline login fail

After various unsuccessful attempts to fix it like changing the type of OS to Linux/Debian, Linux/Ubuntu in the Virtual Box  ( including repairing the Virtual Box Host-only network in Network Connections) , I logged in with the username chronos(no password). I found this in the Virtual Box forums.

Yeah I Finally got in and yes I was able to connect to the Internet after that!

If you are using Wordpress for Your Blog and want to embed Pdf using Issuu. Either you can directly copy and past embed code into your post or you can use Issuu plugin for wordpress.

If your professor asked to submit an assignment tomorrow and you are too lazy to do it, What do you do? You can create a dummy file with a specified file size and extension which looks like the original file and you corrupt the file and submit it. This file can be of any format like .doc, .zip, .mpeg etc.

You can then have much time to finish the real presentation file until your professor checks your file and informs you about the file(which obviously has nothing in it ) . In the mean time you can complete your assignment so tat you can escape without letting  him know  about your laziness.

But the thing is how to corrupt a File

Here is the way..

1. By using File destructor

1. Goto File Destructor. ( and yeah the name is a bit inappropriate name )
2. Enter the some specific size
3. Check the format of the fake file
4. Click on destruct and save file.
5. Save file to  your pc.

2. (OR) You can use the windows command line

Go to command prompt and type the command

fsutil file createnew C:\filename.doc size.

(size in bytes)

Now you can submit your fake file and you can blame your computer if someone asks about the corrupted file.

There are many others tools you can find on the internet , but these are the simplest ways to create a fake file.
