What should managers do for team-driven success

Written by Prasad Addagatla

Role of the managers is crucial in building a strong team for the successful completion of a project. The previous performance of an organization doesn’t matter and it is not at all going to affect future performance as the employees now-a-days are ranked based on management skills.

Managers must have the clear idea of what their responsibilities are, and how to improve their behavior to maintain a good team of employees. Moskal discusses some “executive behaviors” of managers which are generated when “delays, dissension and turnover” of the project occurs. The decision making is given high priority, unshared ideas, frequent monitoring of the project, change of deadlines, not many opportunities given and lower level management is not given access to higher level management.

The experienced managers must take the responsibility to jell the employees and should motivate the front-end managers and also should restrain from fraudulent approaches which individualize a team. The author explains three steps for the execution of this strategy by the managers. Awareness includes making individuals get to know their responsibilities, readiness include finding for innovative tools and the last but by no means least commitment. Commitment is crucial for any employee. It will adhere them to their job and always reminds them of their goals.

He compares the inefficient way as “old way” which was used earlier with efficient way as “new way” which is now followed by the managers. In the new way, the managers are successful in making the employees more responsible and confident. They are good at decision making and got a lot of respect to upper level managers. Failure which is treated as a bitter experience in the old way is now redefined as an opportunity for knowing better solution. Finally, the article is concluded stating all these changes are reflected in the outcome of the projects by better productivity, higher efficiency, and decreased cost of production and employee satisfaction.
